"With one foot in the past, and one planted decisively in the future, The Steampowered Preservation Society is the now. The SPPS, founded on an exploration of the earliest days of Tut Taylor and John Hartford’s “newgrass,” continues to discover and record the myriad of the roots and branches of stringband music. We are deeply honored to be a part of this organization."- Jake Schepps August 2007
Expedition's Latest CD "Ten Thousand Leaves," was recorded in Denver, Mixed in Nashville, and produced by Matt Flinner. Expedition performed at the SPPS Folk Alliance showcase room for the 2007 conference.
2005 marked 2005 marked Jake Schepps's first recorded effort, Expedition. The record contains a combination of original material, with additional tunes by The Beatles, David Byrne, and jazz samba-master Luis Bonfa. After attending the Maryland Banjo Academy several years ago, Jake developed a passion for classic banjo, a ragtime-like style of music written for banjo and was popular over 100 years ago and Expedition includes a song in that style, arranged for banjo, guitar, and bass. Long-time friend and songwriter Benny (Burle) Galloway also offered up two new songs.
With engaging, dynamic material that reflects the Colorado aesthetic of roots music, Expedition tries to offer something for everybody, (especially if you dig the banjo). Playing originals and standards in the swing, honky-tonk, and bluegrass/old time genres, but with intricate composition, counterpoint, and improvisation more characteristic of jazz and classical styles. The Expedition Quartet is a versatile stringband that also features Greg Schochet on archtop guitar and mandolin, violinist Ryan Drickey , and Eric Thorin on bass.
Jake Schepps Jake Schepps is known for his intelligent touch on the banjo and his imaginative variation on stringband music. He has studied traditional and progressive bluegrass with banjoists Mark Vann and Tony Trischka, as well as composition and jazz from trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Art Lande. Jake is a frequent contributor to Banjo Newsletter, the banjo community’s premier print journal, and also plays in the ‘chamber-grass’ ensemble Strings of Tao. In addition to music, Jake teaches emergency wilderness medicine around the world.
Ryan Drickey is armed with a Masters in Violin Performance and holds the 2007 RockyGrass Fiddle Championship. His indomitable abilities and
experience stretch from American and Scandinavian fiddle tunes, to jazz, tango, and classical music. Ryan is also a member of Strings of Tao and the Stanleytones.
Eric Thorin has the ability to make everyone sound better. A bassist with an indefatigable groove and monster chops, he is in demand and plays with Drew Emmitt, Matt Flinner, Tony Furtado, K.C. Groves, and Art Lande.
Greg Schochet is an integral part of Colorado's music community as a performer, producer, and educator. Equally adroit on guitar and mandolin, he also performs with Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams, Colorado’s acclaimed honky-tonk band.
