IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year 2001, 2002, 2004

Of all my recordings the ones I listen to the most are of live shows from the 40's and 50's.  Just knowing these are untouched, that nothing has been added to them make these shows special.  You get the cool licks that maybe you wouldn't hear on records, some mistakes and more.  These shows are so hard to find, it makes you wonder how much of it never got recorded.  I think that as musicians or just avid listeners, it is our responsibility to preserve the history of this music for generations to follow.  Everyone involved with the SPPS are working to make this possible. -Michael Cleveland

At the age of 24 Mike Cleveland has already made his place in the history books of bluegrass music. In 1993 Mike was captured on film with the Bluegrass Youth All Stars at the IBMA award show and an impromptu jam with Doc Watson. That band, organized by IBMA president Pete Wernick, also featured a contemporary of Mike’s, Chris Thile, on mandolin. Later that same year Mike made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a guest of Alison Krauss.

Still in high school, Mike made local appearances with his band Blue Hollow and also with bluegrass singer/guitarist Jeff White. In 1998 Mike made his first CD, the self-released “Sawing on the C String”, co-produced by Jeff Guernsey, and backed by among others, Ronnie Stewart on banjo and Jeff Guernsey on guitar and vocals.

With high school completed, Mike plunged into a full time musical career with Dale Ann Bradley and Coon Creek. In Feb. 2000 Mike joined Rhonda Vincent’s band, the Rage. At the 2001 IBMA awards show Mike was named Fiddle Player of the Year by the association’s professional members, and shares the title of Entertainer of the Year with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. He won the Fiddle Player of the Year award again in 2002.Currently, Mike has rejoined Dale Ann Bradley's band. Also, Mike’s first recording as a Rounder recording artist, Flame Keeper, was released on Feb. 12, 2002. Flame Keeper, which was the 2002 IBMA Instrumental Album of the Year, stands out for its detailed exploration of some of the most traditional uses of the fiddle in bluegrass. Mike chose 15 traditional tunes, well balanced between instrumentals, vocals, and fiddle-five style, along with Audie Blaylock, Tom Adams, Jeff White, Rhonda Vincent, Bobby Hicks, to name a few, that make Flame Keeper one of 2002’s most exciting recordings

In 2004, Mike again won the IBMA's Fiddle Player of the Year award, and shared the Instrumental Album of the Year award with Tom Adams for "Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland Live at the Ragged Edge, an album of (mostly) just fiddle and banjo duets. As 2005 opens, Mike has been busy in the recording studio working on his next Rounder album. Look for it late in 2005!
